Cassandra Clare

I recently read ‘City of Bones’ by Cassandra Clare after hearing much about her, and I thought she would be the perfect first author to showcase for our new Featured Authors section on the page.

Cassandra Clare, author of the ‘The Shadowhunter Chronicles’

Cassandra Clare writes captivating young adult fantasy novels that have me hooked from the very first chapter. Her first, six-book, series is called ‘The Mortal Instruments’.

The series is about Clary Fray who enters a club called Pandemonium and sees something that she was never intended to see. When her mother vanishes, she is transported by a Shadowhunter, or demon slayer, named Jace Wayland into a world filled with a plethora of creatures including demons, faeries, and werewolves. As she searches for her mother, she discovers that no one is who they seem to be. The balance of the world is now in her hands.

There is nothing that I hate more than stumbling upon a spoiler unexpectedly, so I won’t spoil the fun of this story, but suffice it to say that there are lots of twists that you will never see coming. I loved every word of the first book in this series.

The books in the series are:

  1. ‘City of Bones’
  2. ‘City of Ashes’
  3. ‘City of Glass’
  4. ‘City of Fallen Angels’
  5. ‘City of Lost Souls’, just released
  6. ‘City of Heavenly Fire’, releasing March 19, 2014

Excitingly, the movie version of ‘The Mortal Instruments’ is set to come out on August 23, 2013 starring:

Lily Collins (who just starred as Snow White in ‘Mirror Mirror’) as Clary Fray

Jamie Campbell Bower (yep, the adorable (and only adorable because I’m too old to say anything more) Caius from the Twilight movies) as Jace Wayland

and
Robert Sheehan (who played Nathan Young in the tv series, ‘Misfits’) as Simon Lewis.

She has also written a series of prequels called ‘The Infernal Devices’. The books are ‘Clockwork Angel’, ‘Clockwork Prince’, and ‘Clockwork Princess’, releasing in March 2013. To further elucidate her world, she has authored a companion series, ‘The Dark Artifices’, and a guide to the world of Nephilim called ‘The Shadowhunter’s Codex’, which will be available in 2013.

In addition to ‘The Mortal Instruments’, Clare is also working on ‘The Iron Trial’, a five book fantasy series that she is co-authoring with Holly Black, author of ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’. The first book in the series is titled ‘The Iron Trial’ and will be published in 2014.

I posted this article on Facebook and Twitter in mid July, but thought I’d add it again here. I love the newfound creativity authors have in engaging their readers and in revealing their covers and Cassandra Clare is leading the way-

I wanted to give you guys some additional background info on Cassandra Clare, but instead I will direct you to her website because it is a joy to read, especially the bio tab with questions that allow her personality to shine through! For example, when asked she gets inspired to write she says “I believe in inspiration, but I don’t believe it’s that important…To quote Picasso, “Inspiration does exist, but it must find you working.” ”
